Welcome to the first Brkn Arrw Muzik blog on New Acid Planet.
I thought I would start with a bit of an introduction, a sort of statement of intent for the blog and what I hope to share with you on my space here.
I am Tristan, i'm a Scottish music producer, sometime DJ, & lifelong avid music collector & scholar. I have been actively involved in music since my early teens, when I was involved in promoting (and sometimes DJ’ing) at some of the first Techno Clubs at Queen Margaret Union in Glasgow. I was also lucky enough to hear and see a lot of the first generation of electronic/techno artists like Derrick May, Juan Atkins, Orbital, The Orb, Aphex Twin, Slam, Andy Weatherall, Kris Needs & David Holmes, Richie Hawtin & Jon Acquaviva, Twitch & Brainstorm from Pure in Edinburgh; Slam at the Arches in Glasgow.
From those heady days I have followed the muse wherever she has taken me, both musically and in the roles I have tried to fulfill to help my friends with their musical dreams. Over time, I have promoted clubs and gigs, handed out flyers, fly-posted posters in the dead of night (to avoid the cops), helped design merch and posters and sold those pieces at gigs. I have roadied to help bands from having to actually pay somebody, DJ’d in pubs & clubs, helped organise a Music & Arts Festival in Argyll successfully for 3 years. I have also been to a million shows & nightclubs from gigs in tiny clubs to some of the biggest festivals in the world. I have always tried to be a great supporter of musicians & artists that I love, especially as I developed as an artist myself.
Musically, I have followed, read books, magazines, and blogs about and have been influenced by almost every musical genre imaginable. From Metal, Punk, Alternative Rock & Pop Music of my childhood & teens through Techno, Ambient House, Indie Dance & the Free Party scene I was part of in the '90's, to Trip-hop music that still informs my taste today. I have had a great love for Hip Hop since the early days when I first discovered Run DMC, through the metal band Anthrax, Hip Hop has always formed a large part of the soundtrack of my life from the early days through G-Funk and Gangsta and conscious/backpack Rap of Hip Hops golden era to todays’ modern producers who defy genre within the realm.
I was going through my most intense crate-digging period when Napster finally blew the lid off of music, allowing me to pursue my interest in music in a million different directions at once and giving me the opportunity to explore what I see as the Real Great American Song Book - the music of artists like Neil Young, Bob Dylan, The Band, James Taylor, George Clinton, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Fleetwood Mac, Led Zeppelin, Elliott Smith, Steve Earl, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Santana, Jimi Hendrix and many many others wherever the muse would take me.
While I have spent this time researching the history of music and the music business, I have also remained constantly in touch with modern popular music, following the careers of artists as diverse as Queens of the Stone Age, The Mars Volta/At the Drive-in, Rise Against, The Gaslight Anthem, The White Stripes (and everything Jack touches), The Clash, The Ramones, Elliott Smith, Feist, Band of Horses, The Avett Brothers, The Decembrists, Justin Townes Earle, Lissie, Passenger, Buck 65, Atmosphere, RJD2, Nightmares on Wax, Daft Punk, Pharrell Williams as N.E.R.D., the Neptunes, as a solo artist as well as an inspiring producer, Kanye West & DJ Shadow have had an undeniable influence on me as an artist as well as a fan. I am huge fan of modern electronica artists like Francis & the Lights, Cashmere Cat, Childish Gambino, Banks, Sohn, Fka Twigs, Kendrick Lemar, as well as the unknown artists that I try to help through the Soundcloud spotlight on my Brkn Arrw Rebel Radio show. There is just so much good around at the moment, I have said it a million times over the last 30 years, but music has never been better than it is now and every time I have have said it, I meant it more than the time before; there has never been a better time to be a musician or fan of music than right now!!
Over the last few years i have been experimenting with making electronic music, firstly as fun to get to know how to do musical arrangements & progress my song writing as a guitarist, after a years or so the guitar had fallen by the wayside (slightly) & i began releasing music first as Brkn Arrw for my Trip-Hop/Electronica tracks & the more recently as TRS TEN form my more dance floor oriented music. i have been releasing music on Soundcloud for around a year now & so far i have around 1200 followers & have met & made friends with some very interesting people. I have also recently started a 'radio show' which i have been broadcasting on soundcloud as Brkn Arrw Rebel Radio which has been great fun & receive some really heart warming feedback form friend old & new. I hope to continue developing as an artist & continue to relate music under both aliases (& maybe more in the future) and grow my international following & hope to tour as a live act & DJ in the future as well as releasing my music on a record label.
Now I feel it’s time to lay out my intentions with the blog, Over the next few weeks, months & hopefully years, I aim to provide a source of information & inspiration, through a range of straight talking reviews, articles, videos & podcasts on a number of subjects from straight forward reviews of products & services that I use as an electronic artist like Splice, Loopmasters, Loopcloud, prime loops & free resources like Music Radar, with hints & tips on how to make the most of platforms like Soundcloud, Mixcloud, Skiomusic; as well as up to date information on being an artist on Spotify & the other big streaming networks. From links to the music, and music industry books that continue to inspire me, I hope to continually update the blog with relevant music news from around the web to help you make the journey as an artist or DJ a little easier & more interesting.
I also feel a responsibility that as I have a platform and a voice, that I want to dedicate some of this time and blog space to provide links & inspirational information to help when you reach those time when you are not exactly flying in a blue dream (the other end of the creative cycle as I call it) when maybe you need something to distract you from the creative journey, To this end I am going to share the information, writers, practices & diversions that I have found to help me & will hopefully help you. This will range from reviews & articles on books that have found helpful, links to mediation & inspiring videos & tips on how to mix it up a bit & flex different creative muscles.
I hope you take the time to subscribe to the blog or sign up to the website or whatever is required to stay in touch & hopefully something at some point that we post, say or do, will help to inspire you.
Thank you for reading this far, I look forward to our journey.
